Selection Fields/Criteria

FY

FY is the Fiscal Year in which the project was considered active by the funding agency. A fiscal year begins October 1st and ends September 30th of the following year.

The most recently completed fiscal year is selected by default. Choose a different year by clicking the drop-down arrow, then clicking on the desired year. All years (1985 - present) may be selected by choosing it from the bottom of the drop-box, but use this option with caution since search performance may be adversely affected.

Project ID

The Project ID Number identifies the sponsoring agency and activity type, and includes a number that uniquely identifies the project within the agency. It consists of three parts:

PI Name

The Principal Investigator (PI) is a qualified person designated by the applicant institution to direct the project or program. PI's are responsible for the scientific and technical direction of a project.

To search by PI, enter only the investigator's last name or the first few characters of their last name.

Title

Title of the grant or project. Project titles vary greatly in the degree to which they describe the specific research focus.

Search title by entering a single term or the exact text string you wish to match.

Nutrition Code

One or more nutrition classification codes are assigned to each project by the sponsoring agency. This classification system is based on the definition of human nutrition research developed by the Interagency Committee on Human Nutrition Research.

Click on a desired code to select it. Multiple codes can be selected by holding down the CTRL key while clicking each code -- projects containing any of the selected codes will be retrieved.

Nutrition Percent

Often, nutrition may be only one of several different components of a research project. The nutrition percent represents the extent to which a project is considered nutrition-related by the sponsoring agency.

Click the drop-down arrow (or anywhere within the box), then click on the desired nutrition percent 'cut-off' - only projects with an assigned percentage greater-than-or-equal-to the selected value will be retrieved.

Agency

The department, agency, or subagency (e.g., Institute, Center) of the federal government sponsoring the research. It consists of three parts:

Click the drop-down arrow (or anywhere within the box), then click on the desired agency - only projects with the selected agency will be retrieved. Selecting a department (e.g., USDA) automatically includes all agencies and subagencies of that department.

State

The location of the Institution with which the principal investigator is affiliated.

Click the drop-down arrow (or anywhere within the box), then click on the desired state – only projects with the selected state will be retrieved.

Institution

The organizational affiliation of the principal investigator.

Search Institution by entering a single term or text string.

Activity Code

A three-digit code assigned to identify groupings of the type of support mechanisms. Major series are: B - block/formula grant, F - fellowship, K - research career, N - research contract, P - research programs and centers, R - research projects, S - research-related programs, T - training, U - cooperative agreements, Y - interagency agreements, and Z - intramural research. (Codes are derived from the NIH IMPAC system).

Click on a desired code to select it. Multiple codes can be selected by holding down the CTRL key while clicking each code -- projects containing any of the selected codes will be retrieved.

Narratives

A brief description or abstract of the research. Narratives are available for more than 95 percent of the records in the database. While the broad focus of a research project may be outlined, the specific nutrition-related research component is not always described.

Search the Narratives by entering a single term or text string in one or more of the boxes. Use the desired Boolean operator radio buttons to further broaden or narrow your query of narrative terms. Entered text is combined (via AND) with all other selected fields.
